Vin Garbutt

Born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, to an Irish mother and an English father, Vin Garbutt discovered Folk Music whilst he was still at school, becoming a regular visitor (and performer) at The Rifle Club in Cannon Street, Middlesbrough. At the age of 21, he threw caution to the winds and became a professional musician. In 1972 he recorded his first album for Bill Leader - The Valley Of Tees. This firmly established him as a singer and songwriter of fine socially conscious, and environmentally aware songs. Throughout the 70's Vin’s reputation grew rapidly. His act took in songs of the past and his own material, his introductions became more and more zany and funny, and his brilliant tin-whistle playing never ceased to amaze.

His songwriting covers an enormous range of topics and his readiness to speak his mind has inevitably ruffled a few ethical/political feathers. However his gutsy defence of his standpoints has earned him universal respect.

Vin’s career has continued to flourish and 2004 saw him take on another world tour. Unfortunately in 2005 he became seriously ill and had to take 6 months off work. Thankfully he soon made a full recovery and got back on the road! His enforced lay-off let him work on his long awaited new album PersonaGrata which was launched at The Sage, Gateshead on October 6th 2005. Vin continues to perform with his guitar and tin whistles to sold out shows all over the world!
